Being an extrovert is frequently perceived as an advantage at most workplaces. In fact, outgoing personalities is what most companies are looking for when recruiting. Extroverts are usually loud, talkative, attention lovers and comfortable around large groups of people. They tend to casually share personal stories with everyone around and they are really good at improvising. This makes them appear friendly, enthusiastic, strong and confident.

Introverts on the other hand, talk way less. They tend to use precise language and prefer 1:1 meaningful interactions. They are more private and they won’t easily share personal matters with others. This makes them been mistakenly perceived as distant, indifferent and insecure. Even this is often far from truth, we all know that how people see you can affect dramatically your opportunities for professional development.

  1. Develop your communication skills. You are probably good with emails, but when working with extroverts you have to be comfortable with verbal communication too.
  2. Plan ahead. Introverts are really good at planning and horrible at improvising. Whenever you get the chance, plan ahead. Write down your ideas before the meeting, and all the things you want to say.
  3. Share your achievements with other people. For extroverts, this comes naturally. Introverts on the other hand, find it hard to do. Letting other people know what you are working on, what projects you have successfully completed and what you have achieved so far is equally important to the actual work. If you don’t say it, how they would know?
  4. Do a conscious effort to interact with others regularly. This might require a 2-hour nap afterwards, I get it. But it’s essential if you want to build strong professional relationships.
