The good weather makes this time of the year ideal for outdoor activities, therefore many sport events are taking place here in Cyprus during this season. A large number of men and women are testing their limits by taking part in short or long distance running races.
It’s surprising though that until 50 years ago women were not allowed to run long distance races. Marathons were for men.
Kathrine Switzer was the first woman who participated in a marathon race.
In 1967 Switzer slipped through the net by applying for the Boston marathon using her initials, ”KV Switzer”, so organisers presumed she was a man, according to Telegraph. The race director, Jock Semple, spotted Switzer and tried to pull her out. However, she managed to finish the race.
This incident was an unintentional start of a social movement for equality in sport. Thanks to her campaigning, Boston allowed women to compete 5 years later. Since then she became a symbol of female empowerment and social change.
On the 8th of March of every year we celebrate the rights women have asserted and gained so far.
