Polarity Technologies Ltd Had an Amazing Time in China

Polarity Technologies Ltd had a fantastic time in Beijing. Last week, members of our team have visited the headquarters of our mother company, Genimous, in northern China.

Although the flight was long, the trip was definitely worth it. Genimous‘ people were very hospitable and warm, and made sure that we would get the chance to experience the Chinese culture at its  fullest.  Our stay at The Westin Beijing Financial Street hotel, was really pleasant and the view from our room’s window was absolutely stunning. The hotel was located just a few minutes drive away from Genimous‘ offices, and not very far from the very well-known Forbidden City, the largest ancient palatial structure in the world.

After the meetings that were held at Genimous’ premises, we’ve enjoyed the original Chinese cuisine at some of the best restaurants and Hot Pot places in Beijing.

We also got the chance to experience Beijing’s nightlife as we have visited one of the most famous bar-restaurants of the area, where we ‘ve enjoyed delicious food, drinks and live Chinese music by Shichahai lake.

This was the first time in China for some of us, and we will definitely be back.

In Polarity Technologies Ltd, we love travelling and mingling with people from different ethnic backgrounds. If you enjoy travelling the world and experiencing foreign cultures then you better stay tuned. Maybe your dream job is not that far away.

Microsoft Gives $4 Million to Two Female-led Startups

According to Cnet, Microsoft’s two-year-old venture fund, M12, is running a competition for business-focused tech and giving two winners $2 million each in funding. The catch: They must be women-led companies.

“These are companies who might not have been on our radar,” Peggy Johnson, Microsoft’s head of business development, said in an interview.

Microsoft said there’s good reason for its focus. Companies founded solely by women represented just 2.2 percent of all venture capital funding in the US last year, according to data from industry tracker Pitchbook. Yet, research consistently shows that women-led companies tend to generate better returns.

Johnson, a former Qualcomm executive who joined Microsoft in 2014, began M12 (“M” for Microsoft, 12 for the number of letters in “entrepreneur”) as an effort to identify promising startups Microsoft can both invest in and support with access to its technology. Polarity Technologies Ltd learned that last year, the company held an artificial intelligence competition called, awarding $3.5 million to startups working on medical technology, privacy and speech recognition.

This time, Johnson said she wanted to tackle diversity more directly. Despite Microsoft’s diversity efforts, for example, just 7.5 percent of M12’s portfolio companies are founded by women. And while Johnson said that’s above the industry average of about 5 percent, it’s not enough.

“We need more” women in tech, she said.

Polarity Technologies Ltd learned that Microsoft will accept submissions for its competition from Thursday to September 30 from applicants in North America, Europe and Israel.

Windows 10 Now Uses Machine Learning to Stop Updates Installing When a PC is in Use

One of the more frustrating aspects of Windows 10 is the operating system’s ability to start installing updates when you’re in the middle of using it. While Microsoft has tried to address this aggressive approach to updates with features to snooze installation, Windows 10 users continue to complain that updates reboot devices when they’re in use.

Reacting to this feedback, Microsoft says it’s aware of the issues. “We heard you, and to alleviate this pain, if you have an update pending we’ve updated our reboot logic to use a new system that is more adaptive and proactive,” explains Microsoft’s Windows Insider chief Dona Sarkar. Microsoft says it has trained a “predictive model” that will accurately predict when the best time to restart the device is thanks to machine learning. “We will not only check if you are currently using your device before we restart, but we will also try to predict if you had just left the device to grab a cup of coffee and return shortly after,” says Sarkar.

Polarity Technologies Ltd learned that Microsoft has been testing this new model internally, and says it has seen “promising results.”

Facebook Opens a Subsidiary in China, a Breakthrough for the Banned Social Media Platform

After years of being banned, Facebook will now be allowed in China — sort of. Polarity Technologies Ltd learned that the company has obtained a license to open an office in China, which is a major breakthrough considering the social media network is still censored for most residents.

The office will be a $30 million subsidiary called Facebook Technology (Hangzhou), located in the city Hangzhou, which is also the headquarters of Alibaba. Facebook will be running a startup incubator that will make small investments and give advice to local businesses, an anonymous source told Reuters.

The subsidiary is listed as wholly owned by Facebook Hong Kong Limited, according to Reuters, which read the business filing that has since been removed. Facebook does have a sales office in Hong Kong, which isn’t subject to the rules and censorship of the mainland.

Last week in an interview with Recode, chief executive Mark Zuckerberg was coy on the subject of China. When asked where Facebook was on China, he responded, “I mean, we’re blocked.” But he also indicated that the company was definitely still interested in pursuing business there. “I think it’s hard to have a mission of wanting to bring the whole world closer together and leave out the biggest country.”

Twitter is Sweeping Fake Accounts and People are Losing Followers

Polarity Technologies Ltd learned that Twitter has recently announced that it has been removing “dubious or fraudulent accounts” as users are likely to see a drop in the number of their followers. Last week various reports claimed that Twitter had suspended around 70 million fake accounts in months of May and June. And now Twitter says that this week they will be “removing locked accounts from follower counts” to all profiles across the globe.

An account is locked on Twitter when it shows an unusual spammy behavior i.e. sudden increase in tweets, multiple spontaneous mentions, tweets with misleading links and many users reporting against that account. Even when Twitter suspends these accounts, they still are visible in a user’s followers count but not anymore. As the Twitter‘s Trust & Safety Lead Vijaya Gadde stated in a blog post;

“Follower counts are a visible feature, and we want everyone to have confidence that the numbers are meaningful and accurate… This specific update is focused on followers because it is one of the most visible features on our service and often associated with account credibility.”
